New Features in Release 5.1.1:

1. Date and Time Control

The current date and time can be modified through the new Date and Time slider displayed on the Head Up Display on the upper left corner of the 3D window and the Date and Time Settings dialog box available from the icon next to the slider.

The Sun and moon position in the Atmospheric Effects tab of the Project Settings was renamed to Project Startup Date and Time.

In addition, the Use system date and time when starting the project option was changed to Always use a defined local time. This option maintains the defined time at the area you are looking at.

2. Simplified Sunlight Source

The sunlight source can be turned on or off. When the sunlight source is turned on, the sun, moon and the sun’s flares objects are displayed and positioned based on the time, date and time zone provided. In addition, the sun is used as the light source for the project according to its position. The sunlight affects the lighting on the terrain and on building objects.

3. Simplified Shadow Analysis Tool

The Shadow Analysis tool calculates the shadow cast from buildings and 3D objects in a given radius based on the sun’s position. The sun is positioned according to the time, date and time zone you set using the Date and Time controls.

The shadows dynamically updates when the system date and time is changed.

4. Indoor Editor and Navigation tools

The Indoor Editor tool creates indoor locations and entrance icon for 3D models. Clicking the indoor entrance icon opens the Indoor Navigation popup enable easy navigation inside the building and list of the locations created by the editor. The tool also supports underground views.

5. Extract Terrain to Zebra

The Extract Terrain to Zebra tool creates a Zebra Imaging model from a local or remote MPT database to your local machine. You can create a Zebra model for producing 3D hologram images using the Extract Terrain to Zebra tool.

The extracted model includes the elevation and imagery information from the terrain database and buildings created by TerraExplorer Pro.

6. New SGAPI Interactive Tutorial

The SGAPI Interactive Tutorial available from the Help menu provides a set of samples written with SGAPI. You can execute the samples to see their effects then easily review the source code of each sample.

7. TerraGate SFS Import Support for Planar Layers

The TerraGate SFS import support for Planar Layers loads and streams layers from feature layers in a planar coordinate system.

8. Improved Performance

§   Windows Vista specific accelerations and improvements

§   Various optimizations for loading and streaming of big amounts of 3D models (XPL)

New Features in Release 5.1:

1.    Underground Navigation

The underground navigation mode allows you to explore the subsurface of the terrain. You can navigate under the terrain’s surface and through buildings. A subsurface grid navigation aid appears when you navigate below the terrain, allowing you to navigate the same way as above ground.

2.    Terrain Opacity

You can set the opacity of the terrain in the 3D View. The opacity is defined as a percentage, where 100% is opaque and 0% is transparent. When the opacity is other than 100% (opaque) objects that are submerged in the terrain become visible through it.

3.    Modify Terrain

The Modify Terrain tool changes the elevation values of the terrain based on a polygon. The surface of the terrain is raised or lowered according to the elevation values of the polygon's points. Different elevation behaviors allow replacing, croping above or cropping below the original values of the terrain. The interior of the polygon can be flat or irregular in shape.

Hole in Terrain

4.    Hole on Terrain

Hole on Terrain cuts holes in the terrain based on a polygon that exposes the other side of the terrain through the opening.

5.    Enhanced KML Importer

§         Increased support for advanced KML capabilities

§         New support for KMZ files.

6.    Import Sketchup Collada Models

§         Load 3D models in Collada (Sketchup) format.

7.    Shadow Analysis Tool

The Shadow Analysis tool sets the sun position creating shadows on buildings. The sun’s position is based on the given time, date and time zone.

8.    Advanced Feature Layer Capabilities

§         Lite objects: The Use Lite Object requires less system resources for displaying a layer. It is ideal when displaying big layers. Lite objects cannot be selected or edited and do not have messages or tool tips.

§         Dynamic annotation placement: Dynamic Placement enables annotations to be dynamically moved along the polyline object to which they are assigned, to a visible area in the 3D window.

§         Minimize text duplications: Minimize Duplications option reduces instances of repeating labels, with the same text or image removed from the view.

§         Support for polygons with holes (multi patch).

9.    DSN Import Plug

§         Loads, streams and manipulates feature data from a variety of file and database sources via the DSN channel

§         Supports sources such as ASCII and Text files, Excel (xsl, xslx), Access (mdb, accdb), SQL Server and all supported ODBC sources.

10.                      Streaming Feature Server (SFS) Import Support

§         Loads and streams layers from a TerraGate Streaming Feature Server (SFS).

§         The TerraGate SFS manages and streams layers of features, including vectors, polygons and points stored in different formats. The Feature Server can serve out data from one machine (or more) to a large number of users while generating optimized cache files.

11.                      Imagery layer improvements

§         Uses data from local MPT or remote TerraGate servers as imagery layers

§         Read imagery data from ArcSDE servers

§         Support secured (HTTPS) servers

12.                      ObjectRaku's Sextant Editor and Viewer integrated into TerraExplorer

§         Displays the Sextant viewing and editing window inside of a TerraExplorer container

§         Displays Sextant models in the 3D World

13.                      Hyper-Link Multiple Files to a Single Object

§         Links multiple documents to a single object

§         A Links message displays links to multiple documents or files. You can organize the hyperlinks into categories like pictures, videos and text

§         You can activate a hyperlink to launch the appropriate file viewer based on file association. For example, a *.doc hyperlink launches the Microsoft Word application (if installed) and displays the document’s content. For security reasons, the file is opened in an HTML browser. If the browser supports this file type (i.e., BMP file), it appears in the selected container. If the browser does not support this file type or there are security restrictions, the browser displays the appropriate error or warning message.

14.                      Geo-Referenced Popup Windows

§         TerraExplorer can draw an arrow from an object in the 3D world to a pop-up window when the user assigns a message window to an object.

15.                      Atmospheric Effects

The Atmospheric Effects sets the appearance of the atmosphere in the 3D Window. You can control the horizon distance, fog color, as well as, the sun and moon display.

The sun, moon and sun flare objects can be displayed and positioned based on a given date, time and time zone.

You can also display atmospheric effects such as fog and visibility distance.

16.                      Installation Flexibility

Allow non-administrative and restricted users to install and use TerraExplorer and TerraExplorer Pro applications on Windows XP and Vista operating systems.

17.                      TerraExplorer Tools

§         Improved Predator tool (C2MP extension only)

18.                      New Urban Design section for the “Draw” Tool

Terra Explorer Pro allows you to create simple and/or customized objects including markers, free hand lines, Mil-Std-2525b symbols, and urban designs.

The set of tools in the Standard tab is designed for presentations and white board applications. The new set of tools in the Urban Design tab is designed to build roads, junctions and traffic lights in an urban setting. The tools allow you to draw freestyle lines by tracking the mouse pointer movements, to create splined and thick lines, to simply and quickly add notes, and to point to locations on the terrain using the virtual cursor.
